Charleston Police Officer Shot By Escaping Inmate

A Charleston police officer was shot on Saturday while trying to prevent an inmate's escape.

Charleston, WV – A Charleston police officer was shot at CAMC General Hospital Saturday afternoon while trying to stop an inmate from escaping.

The incident happened just after 2:30 p.m. when a prisoner being guarded by a Montgomery police officer escaped custody, according to WSAZ.

Charleston police were called to assist and a Charleston officer got into a struggle with the suspect in an alley behind the hospital.

A Montgomery police officer also became involved in the fight, and the suspect was able to disarm the Montgomery officer and use that officer’s gun to shoot the Charleston officer.

The officers were able to get the suspect back into custody.

The identify of the shot officer has not been released, but they are in stable condition.

The suspect, Brian Ogle, is a fugitive from Tennessee and was being treated at the hospital for injuries sustained during a pursuit four days prior.

Authorities are consulting with Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office to determine new charges for Ogle.
