Carjacker Brings Compound Bow To Gunfight With Police, Loses

Cobb County, GA – A suspect armed with a compound bow was shot by police after allegedly carjacking a woman in Atlanta and pointing his weapon at officers.

The incident began in the 1400-block of West Peachtree Street in the early-morning hours of Sept. 28, WSB reported.

A woman told investigators a man armed with a bow and arrow approached her car, fired an arrow into the windshield, and ordered her to get out, according to police.

The woman complied with his demands and the suspect took off with her vehicle, WSB reported.

Law enforcement officers from Marietta and Cobb County located the suspect near South Marietta Parkway and Powder Springs Road at approximately 7:10 a.m. after the carjacker slammed into a bridge, according to police.

“Officers from multiple agencies responded, observed a vehicle with heavy front-end damage resting against the bridge and expecting to see an individual or individuals needing medical assistance,” the Marietta Police Department (MPD) said in a press release, according to the Cobb County Courier.

But when they approached the crashed vehicle, a man standing nearby grabbed a compound bow and aimed it at one of the officers, the MPD said.

“A Marietta officer gave multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon. When the commands were not followed the officer drew their handgun and fired it, striking the suspect one time,” the department said.

The wounded suspect collapsed to the ground but “refused to comply with additional verbal commands,” according to the MPD.

Police ultimately had to bring a shield to the scene so they could safely approach the suspect to place him in handcuffs and render aid.

“The suspect was conscious, alert and breathing when transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital moments later,” the MPD said.

His identity has not been released.

According to investigators, a man fitting the description of the carjacker also tried to steal vehicles from two other people that morning, WSB reported.

Neither attempt was successful.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will handle the ongoing investigation into the officer-involved shooting, WSB reported.
