Calloway County Sheriff’s Deputy Murdered Outside Sheriff’s Office

Benton, KY – A Calloway County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot in the line of duty during a confrontation at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. on May 16, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) said in a press release on Monday evening.

First responders from multiple agencies responded to the sheriff’s department and the Marshall County Detention Center, which are located in the 100-block of West Fifth Street, WSIL reported.

They arrived to find a suspect and a Calloway County sheriff’s deputy had both been shot.

The deputy was rushed to a local hospital, but did not survive the attack, the KSP confirmed.

The Taylorsville Police Department (TPD) identified the slain hero as Calloway Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jody Cash, a retired KSP sergeant.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and the Calloway County Sheriffs Department,” the TPD said in a Facebook post. “Rest easy brother.”

The suspect was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Details regarding what led up to the shooting have not been released, nor has the identity of the suspect.

“Britainy and I ask Kentuckians to join us in holding the family and loved ones of the Calloway County Deputy in their prayers,” Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said in a Facebook post. “This deputy has paid the ultimate sacrifice today while serving our commonwealth. Let us honor the life, bravery and service of this deputy.”

KSP Critical Incident Response Team detectives and Post 1 troopers are handling the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Marshall County Sheriff Eddie McGuire released a statement notifying the public that the sheriff’s office’s administrative office will be closed through Wednesday.

Officers and deputies from surrounding departments will be handling the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office’s (MCSO) calls in the interim, Sheriff McGuire said.
