California Man Arrested For Throwing 40-Ounce Bottle At Back Of Cop’s Head

Santa Monica, CA – A 38-year-old man was arrested for throwing a 40-ounce glass bottle at the back of a police officer’s head during the May 31 protests.

Drew Miller was arrested July 17 for throwing the bottle, according to KTLA.

According to police, the bottle shattered on the police officer’s helmet and caused injuries to the officer.

Miller was charged with suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, according to KTLA. He was being held on $500,000 bail.

The Santa Monica Police Department is still asking for information on any other crimes committed during the May 31 protests.

The protests came after George Floyd died while in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25. Floyd’s death sparked a series of protests across the nation, in which many turned into riots.

During the May 31 protests in Santa Monica, groups of protesters started looting stores, according to KCBS. There were multiple fires started and several police cruisers were damaged, according to KCBS.

The Santa Monica Fire Department said there were four structure fires, four car fires and a Dumpster fire, according to KCBS.

There was a 4 p.m. curfew put into effect on May 31 by the city of Santa Monica. Despite the curfew, people were seen looting businesses, according to KTLA.

Santa Monica Mayor Pro Tem Terry O’Day said that the National Guard was called in May 31, according to KCBS.

People fought with police in Santa Monica and tear gas was deployed by the police that same day, according to KTLA.

There were more than 400 people arrested over the May 31 weekend, according to KABC.

Many of the people arrested were not residents of the city.

Police Chief Cynthia Renaud said 95% of the people arrested were not from Santa Monica, according to KTLA.
