BREAKING: Vestavia Hills Police Officer Shoots Himself In Patrol Car

Police said a Vestavia Hills police officer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on duty Wednesday morning.

Vestavia Hills, AL – An on-duty Vestavia Hills police officer committed suicide behind his wife’s business Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the 1000-block of Montgomery Highway Wednesday morning, after they received a report of a police officer suffering from a “reported self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to a statement released by the Vestavia Hills Police Department.

An injured officer was found behind The Vintage Barber Shop, and transported by the Vestavia Hills Fire Department to UAB Medical Center for treatment, the statement said.

AL.com reported that the officer was rushed to UAB with a police escort. Birmingham Police and Homewood Police cleared traffic and blocked intersections for faster travel, they said.

More than a half dozen Vestavia and Birmingham police officers escorted the stretcher into the emergency room, where the unidentified officer was pronounced dead a short time later.

The officer was in uniform and on duty, when he attempted suicide, AL.com reported.

The Vintage Barber Shop remained closed and blocked off by crime scene tape on Wednesday afternoon as investigators worked to figure out what may have led to the officer’s death, according to WTVM.
