Brooklyn, NY – A car fatally struck two children and injured multiple other people in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at about 1 p.m., near the intersection of 9th Street and Fifth Avenue.
A car driven by a woman crossed into the oncoming lane and struck several pedestrians, killing two children. A smashed stroller could be seen laying behind the car that had struck it in scene photos.
The children were transported to Methodist Hospital, but could not be saved, the New York Daily News reported.
New York City Councilman Brad Lander told WABC the young victims were 2 and 4 years old.
Police said a woman who was also hit by the car was believed to be the mother of one of the children who was killed, WABC reported. She was transported to the hospital.
The fire department said two other victims, including the mother of the other child who was killed, also were injured by the car, according to WABC.
The driver of the vehicle that killed the children tried to leave the scene, but was detained and taken into police custody, the New York Daily News reported.
