BREAKING: Tennessee Deputy Shot, Armed Standoff Underway

Sullivan County, TN – A Sullivan County deputy was shot while trying to apprehend a wanted fugitive early on Friday morning.

The gunman has barricaded himself inside a residence and an armed standoff is ongoing.

The incident began shortly after midnight on Jan. 21 when police tried to pull over a suspect who had “four to five” warrants out for his arrest, Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy told WJHL.

Police said the suspect refused to stop and fled to a residence on Riley Hollow Road, then barricaded himself inside.

As deputies approached the house, the suspect fired at least one round through the door, striking one of the deputies, WJHL reported.

The deputy was critically wounded in the attack.

His fellow deputies were able to pull him to safety and then he was rushed to Johnson City Medical Center, WJHL reported.

Sheriff Cassidy said that as of 6 a.m., the wounded hero was awaiting surgery.

The gunman remained barricaded inside the home.

“We are attempting negotiations right now,” Sheriff Cassidy told WJHL. “We are attempting to talk to him, trying to get him to come out peacefully. He’s refusing to do so at this time.”

The suspect fired more rounds at deputies at approximately 9 a.m., according to the news outlet.

Multiple agencies have responded to the home to assist with the standoff, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the Bluff City Police Department (BCPD), the Kingsport Police Department (KPD), and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).

A bomb squad, a drone, and an armored vehicle were also all dispatched to the scene by the Kingsport Police Department.

The TBI is handling the ongoing investigation, the Times News reported.

“The scene is currently still active,” TBI spokesperson Leslie Earhart said. “While we’ve been requested to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting, we can’t begin our investigation until the incident is resolved.”
