Memphis, TN – A Memphis police officer was shot while investigating a report of a suspicious vehicle at a local gas station on Monday night.
The incident occurred in the 4100-block of Winchester at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Dec. 5, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) tweeted on Monday night.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), officers responded to the area due to a report of a suspicious vehicle that was parked outside a gas station, WATN reported.
An officer was approaching the suspect vehicle when a gunfight erupted between the officer and the suspect inside the car, the TBI said.
Details regarding what led up to the shootout were not immediately released.
The officer was hit multiple times during the attack and was rushed to Regional One Hospital in critical condition, the MPD said.
Sources said the wounded hero was shot in the hip and in the vest, according to WHBQ.
The suspect bailed out of the vehicle and took off running towards a nearby business, WATN reported.
The TBI said in a press release that the gunman was ultimately found dead inside an idling vehicle.
“Information from the scene indicates that for reason still under investigation, shots were fired by the individual and the officer. Both were struck in the exchange of gunfire,” TBI spokesperson Keli McAlister told WMC.
The suspect’s identity was not immediately released.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI special agents work to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence,” the TBI said in the press release. “As in any case, TBI’s investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.”
