San Diego, CA – A San Diego police officer was shot early Monday morning while trying to apprehend a suspect who was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle, according to investigators.
A police standoff with the gunman remains ongoing, KFMB reported.
The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said the incident occurred in the 3500-block of Main Street shortly after midnight on Dec. 12, according to KFMB.
Investigators said the suspect was driving a stolen Toyota 4-Runner and refused to pull over, triggering a lengthy pursuit.
A police helicopter assisted with the chase from above, KFMB reported.
The suspect eventually ditched the stolen vehicle near Logan Avenue and 45th, then took off running, according to police.
“The suspect left the vehicle and fled on foot with officers in pursuit,” the SDPD said, according to KFMB. “That suspect opened fire on officers, hitting one officer at least one time. Officers were not able to return fire.”
The officer was shot once in the chest and twice in the arm, KFMB reported.
The wounded hero was rushed to a local hospital and has been stabilized.
Police said the gunman has barricaded himself up inside an apartment building and that a police standoff remains ongoing, KFMB reported.
Police have evacuated area residents.
“Officers have been evacuating people that we should be evacuated,” SDPD Lieutenant Adam Sharki told KSWB. “Everybody else is being asked to shelter in place.”
A SWAT team is on-scene and negotiators have made contact with the unidentified gunman, KFMB reported.
