Riverside, CA – A parent has taken a teacher hostage and barricaded themselves inside of a classroom in Castleview Elementary School at 6201 Shaker Drive.
The incident started on Tuesday at around 11:15 AM, according to NBC Los Angeles.
It’s not clear at this time if the suspect is armed. Hostage negotiators are working to talk the suspect into surrendering.
The 670 students who attend the school have been taken to a nearby campus, and the school district is still not allowing parents to pick up the students.
The school issued a statement saying, “Unfortunately, at this time we cannot release any students until the lockdown order has been lifted. “We will communicate with you again as soon as the situation is resolved and give you further instructions on student pickup.”
UPDATE: Parents are now being allowed to pick up children.
UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as a 27-year-old parent of a first-grader. The hostage has been identified as a teacher in her 70s.
