BREAKING: One Person Shot, Hours-Long Standoff Between Gunman, Police Continues

Branford, CT – The gunman who has been barricaded inside a hair salon in Branford all afternoon shot and wounded one civilian, and then reportedly claimed he has a bomb and threatened to blow up the building.

The shooter has been firing at police and civilians for about five hours.

UPDATE: The suspect has been found dead. It’s unclear at this time if he was killed by law enforcement or suicide.

A witness told the Hartford Courant they heard the first burst of gunfire at about 11:50 a.m. on April 13.

Steve Milano described having heard the gunman fire 200 to 300 rounds in the first hour of the standoff.

Milano manages the Richlin Home and Auto located across the street from where the gunman is barricaded.

He told the Hartford Courant the shooter was “firing indiscriminately” with an automatic weapon.

“It’s crazy, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Milano said.

Branford police said the suspect is barricaded inside the Leon James International Hair Studio near Main Street at Cherry Hill Road and urged people to avoid the entire area, WABC reported.

Branford police put out a statement that said “responding officers encountered heavy gunfire coming from the upper floors of a business/apartment building.”

Police said 911 callers reported that someone had been shot nearby, the Hartford Courant reported.

Branford Fire and EMS said the victim was found nearby and transported to the Yale New Haven Hospital with injuries that were reportedly non-life threatening.

Branford police said officers were pinned down by the suspect’s gunfire and remained that way until armored Bearcat vehicles arrived on the scene, the Hartford Courant reported.

Witnesses in a nearby laundromat told WTNH they heard the gunman firing a gun at officers and pedestrians.

They said police told them to take cover in the back of the business.

The gunman has fired hundreds of shots from the second floor of the house where the hair salon is located, the Hartford Courant reported.

Police have not said whether there are any hostages trapped inside the hair salon with the gunman.

Sources told WTNH the bomb squad had arrived on the scene after the suspect threatened to blow up the building he was barricaded in.

Route 146 was closed both directions at North Harbor Street.
