Sandy MaloneIndianapolis, IN – An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officer was shot on Thursday afternoon while responding to a domestic disturbance on the east side of the city.
The shooting occurred at about 2:50 p.m. on April 9 when officers responded to the 1800-block of Edinburgh Square, southwest of 21st Street and North Franklin road, for a report of a domestic disturbance, WXIN reported.
Police said the officer was shot shortly after he arrived on the scene.
The wounded hero was transported to the hospital for treatment, WXIN reported.
Police said a female victim was also shot.
“Short time ago district officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the apartment behind us,” IMPD Assistant Chief Chris Bailey told reporters at the scene. “When the officers arrived, they went up to the apartment. At that time, shots were fired. During those shots, one of our officers was shot and also a female victim inside the house. Both were transported to hospitals.”
Chief Bailey did not release the identity or condition of either the wounded officer or the woman, WXIN reported.
No information has been released about the status of the shooter and whether they were taken into custody.
Police have asked people to avoid the area, WXIN reported.
Officers have been advised not to go to the Eskenazi Hospital, as they usually would to support their wounded brother, because of the risk of exposure to coronavirus.
