BREAKING: Officer Shot In The Head During Gunfight At Georgia Hotel

Covington, GA – A Covington police officer was shot in the head during a gun battle with a domestic violence suspect on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred at the OYO Hotel off of Alcovy Road, WSB reported.

Officers responded to the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m. after receiving a call from hotel staff regarding a couple who was fighting, according to WAGA.

A female witness staying in a nearby room told WAGA the couple was “arguing all night.”

She said an officer went to the room and knocked on the door, but that the couple initially refused to open it.

The shootout began shortly after someone inside the room finally opened the door, the witness told WAGA.

She said she ducked back into her own room after hearing the officer repeatedly ordering someone to “put the gun down.”

Police said one officer was shot in the head during the ensuing exchange of gunfire, WAGA reported.

A law enforcement source told the news outlet the wounded hero was hit under his eye and that the bullet subsequently lodged in his jaw.

The gunman was fatally shot when a second officer returned fire, WAGA reported.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately released.

No one else was hit by the gunfire, WAGA reported.

The wounded officer was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta by emergency medical personnel.

Police said he was listed in stable condition early Wednesday morning and that he is expected to survive, WAGA reported.

His identity was not released.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the ongoing investigation into the fatal officer-involved shooting, WAGA reported.
