Milwaukee, WI – An off-duty Milwaukee police detective was shot multiple times during what police believe may have been an attempted carjacking on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. on Jan. 13 near East Buffalo and North Water streets in Milwaukee’s Third Ward, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
“I heard the noises that sound like gunshots, my employee was actually taking a break, eating at our window,” the owner of Aloha Poke Co recalled. “At that moment, I just saw someone running past my store really fast.”
“My employee saw the guy running past our store as well. That’s pretty much all we saw because it was just kind of a blur,” the store owner continued. “And then we saw people kind of looking outside Shake Shack. I actually locked my door because I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on.”
“And within a few minutes a police car showed up so we assumed those were gunshots and something did happen… Some of the officers came in asking few questions, but I’m not exactly sure exactly what went down,” he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Law enforcement sources told WITI that the Milwaukee police officer who was shot was off-duty when he encountered a carjacking and tried to intervene.
Officials have not released any information about the condition of the wounded hero, but the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the coroner’s office had said it was not responding to the scene and the officer was believed to still be alive.
There were some reports that the officer had been shot twice in the stomach.
