Kansas City, MO – A Kansas City police officer was shot in the head on Thursday after he responded to a call about a man waving a handgun at a McDonald’s.
He was the second Kansas City Police Department officer shot on Thursday.
Missouri State Highway Patrol said the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on July 2 when officers responded to the McDonald’s restaurant near 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard for a call about a shirtless man waving a pistol, KMBC reported.
Authorities said that the suspect fled when officers arrived.
Police chased after him on foot and when they rounded a corner, the suspect opened fire on them, KMBC reported.
A Kansas City Police Department officer was shot in the head, according to The Kansas City Star.
Kansas City Police Department Spokesman Sergeant Jake Becchina said another officer returned fire and hit the suspect.
Missouri State Highway Patrol said the wounded officer was transported to the hospital and taken into surgery in very critical condition, The Kansas City Star reported.
Police said the suspect died.
Residents have been asked to avoid the area.

Police have not yet released the name of the wounded officer, nor have they identified the dead gunman.
Another Kansas City police officer was shot earlier on Thursday after gunman robbed a person waiting at a bus stop and then got on a bus, KMBC reported.
An officer attempted to board the bus from the back-side entrance and the suspect opened fire on him.
Then the gunman shot the bus driver and tried to make a getaway, KMBC reported.
The suspect was shot by police outside the bus as he tried to exit.
The officer, the bus driver, and the gunman were transported to the hospital, KMBC reported.
The officer, an 18-year veteran of the police force, was treated and released.
Police said the bus driver’s injuries were not life threatening, KMBC reported.
The violence continues in Kansas City as a police officer and a driver for KCATA were shot at during a robbery. This senseless violence has to stop and we as a council need to address measures we can take to help stop it.

The suspect was in critical condition.
