BREAKING: Man ‘Armed With Explosives’ Murders Deputy, Wounds Another

On deputy was killed and another injured Saturday afternoon.

Ben Lomond, CA – A Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputy was murdered and another was wounded during an incident Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened near Alba Road and Highway 9 at around 3:40 p.m., according to KSBW.

Details aren’t clear about what led up to the incident, but a suspect reportedly “armed with explosives” hit one deputy with a vehicle while another deputy was hit either either shrapnel or a bullet.

One of the deputies was reportedly killed while the other is in critical condition.

Update: The slain deputy has been identified as Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller, and the suspect is in custody.

Authorities initially said that there was an active threat and called the bomb squad.

KPIX now reports that the suspect is in custody.
