BREAKING: Illinois Deputy Murdered By Motorist He Stopped To Help

Wayne County, IL – A Wayne County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot early on Wednesday morning after he stopped to help a disabled motorist on the interstate.

The deputy responded to a motorist assist call at about 5 a.m. on Dec. 29 at the 115 mile marker on Interstate 64, The Navigator reported.

Authorities said that shortly after the deputy called in the license plate information on the vehicle he’d stopped to help, he was shot.

Then the gunman stole the murdered deputy’s patrol vehicle and fled the scene, The Navigator reported.

The patrol vehicle was found abandoned later.

Police believe the suspect or suspects fled on foot at that point, according to The Navigator.

The deputy was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:07 a.m.

A large section of I-64 has been shut down and a massive multi-agency manhunt has been launched for the deputy’s killer, The Navigator reported.

Numerous law enforcement officers were searching the area on four-wheelers.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding confirmed that it was a Wayne County sheriff’s deputy who was murdered, KFVS reported.

He said Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputies were assisting with the transport of the fallen hero’s body to the coroner’s office in Evansville.

The Evansville Police Department said its officers were also assisting with the transport, KFVS reported.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the name of the fallen deputy.
