SandyMaloneSandpoint, ID – Two Sandpoint Police Officers were shot early Monday morning while responding to a call in Ridley Village in Bonner County, Sandpoint Police Chief Corey Coon said during a press briefing.
Officers were called to a residence at 3:10 a.m., and made contact with the person who had called the police, according to a Facebook post by Sandpoint Police Department on March 5.
While they were talking to the victim, the suspect stepped out of the residence and began shooting at the police. Both officers were struck by gunfire, KHQ reported.
Police returned fire, and the male suspect was killed, Chief Coon said.
One officer was transported to Kootenai Medical Center, and was taken into surgery. The other officer was transported to Bonner General Hospital. Their names will be released later, the chief said.
Bonner County Commissioner Dan McDonald posted on Facebook that the officers are “doing well,” according to KHQ.
Sandpoint High and Middle Schools were open but in lockdown. Forrest Bird Charter Schools were closed for the day.
Coeur d’Alene police are in charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, Chief Coon said.
