Hollywood, FL – A Hollywood police officer who was injured during a fight with a suspect on Sunday night has died at a local hospital.
Sources confirmed the officer’s death early Monday morning, WPLG reported.
The incident occurred in the 400-block of North Hills Drive at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 as officers were investigating a “suspicious incident,” Hollywood Police Department (HPD) spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi told the Miami Herald.
Details regarding how the officer was injured and whether or not a suspect was apprehended have not been released.
Sources said they heard gunfire in the area shortly before the injured officer was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital, WPLG reported.
One resident reported having seen someone in handcuffs, according to the news outlet.
HPD officers gathered outside the police station wearing mourning bands on their badges and crying in the wake of the officer’s death, WPLG reported.
The American flag outside the station has been lowered to half-staff.
Hollywood police announced on social media that the department would hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. to release more information.

A Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter was flying over the neighborhood in the wake of the incident and officers were seen going door-to-door in the residential neighborhood, the Miami Herald reported.
K9 teams were also seen in the area.
