Coggon, IA – A Linn County sheriff’s deputy was shot multiple times while responding to a robbery at a gas station on Sunday night.
A manhunt for the suspect remained underway on Monday morning, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) said in a press release on Monday morning.
The alleged shooter is described as a black male in his 30s.
Deputies said the suspect was estimated to be between five feet, 10 inches tall and six feet, two inches tall and weighs between 200 and 220 pounds.
He was last seen wearing dark pants and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, according to the press release.
The attack occurred at Casey’s General Store located at 5110 Highway 13 at approximately 10:19 p.m. on Sunday, the LCSO said.
Deputies responded to the store after receiving a report of an alarm at that location.
LCSO said that when one of the deputies entered the building, “he was met by an armed suspect.”
The gunman fired multiple rounds at the deputy, striking him several times.
The shooter then fled the scene in a van, the LCSO said.
Another responding deputy spotted the suspect vehicle and began pursuing the alleged gunman, who ultimately crashed on North 3rd Street and took off on foot.
Multiple agencies from across northeast Iowa have responded to the area to assist in the ongoing search.
Investigators said they are still “exploring all avenues,” but that they believe there is only one suspect in the attack, according to WHO.
The wounded deputy was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with serious injuries, the LCSO said.
The sheriff’s office issued a tweet overnight asking residents to stay inside and to keep their doors locked.
