BREAKING: Dallas Officer And K9 Partner Shot By Suspect Involved In Shooting Of Two Women

Dallas, TX – A veteran Dallas police officer and a department K9 were shot early Friday morning while trying to apprehend a man wanted in connection with another shooting, according to investigators.

Police had been searching the Pleasant Grove area for hours after a man allegedly shot two people at a residence in Cypress Avenue, KDFW reported.

Investigators said the initial shooting, which occurred at about 9:45 p.m. on April 27, was connected to a domestic violence incident.

Police said the victims of the initial shooting are the gunman’s sister and mother, WFAA reported.

Investigators said they also received a second 911 call about a man covered in blood who was knocking on doors in the neighborhood.

“The officers were responding to a family violence call,” Dallas Police Association (DPA) President Sergeant Mike Mata told KDFW. “The officers were then looking for the suspect for an extended period of time.”

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Friday, an officer and a Dallas police K9 located the alleged suspect in a creek area, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire, Sgt. Mata said.

The officer and the K9 were both hit during the attack, as was the gunman, KDFW reported.

The wounded officer was rushed to Baylor University Medical Center with gunshot wounds to his shoulder and leg, according to KXAS.

Both he and the injured K9 are expected to survive, KDFW reported.

Sgt. Mata told reporters the wounded officer is well-known throughout the Dallas Police Department (DPD) and that he has been on the force for about 20 years.

He is married and has children.

“He’s doing well, obviously he’s in care. He’s going to be here for a while, spoke with the family, but he’s doing well,” the sergeant told KDFW.

The K9 suffered a through-and-through gunshot wound to the shoulder and was being treated on Friday morning, according to WFAA.

According to Dallas City Councilwoman Cara Mendelsohn, the gunman died as a result of the shootout, KDFW reported.

His identity was not immediately released.

The suspect’s mother and sister are expected to survive, WFAA reported.
