BREAKING: Child Shot At Memphis Elementary School

Memphis, TN – A child was shot at Cummings Elementary School in Memphis on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at about 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 30 at the elementary school located in the 1000-block of Cummings Street near Walker Avenue in the Soulsville neighborhood, WREG reported.

The Memphis Police Department dispatch confirmed that a “male juvenile” had sustained a gunshot wound on campus, the Commercial Appeal reported.

The victim was transported to Methodist LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.

Police said the child is in critical condition, WHBQ reported.

Memphis police said they were looking for another little boy as a suspect in the shooting but have not yet released any descriptions.

Cummings Elementary School remains in lockdown, WBRC reported.

“SCS Security officers are working with law enforcement officers to ensure the safety of our students and employees,” Shelby County Schools (SCS) Superintendent Joris Ray said.

The school district said it was “aware of the incident” and that South Memphis elementary school was also on temporary lockdown as a safety precaution, the Commercial Appeal reported.

“We are aware of the incident at Cummings K-8 and will share preliminary information as soon as possible,” Shelby County Schools said in a statement. “The school is currently on lockdown as a safety precaution. Parents have been notified of the situation. We are working with SCS Security and the Memphis Police Department to gather more information for further updates.”
