Ulvalde, TX – Multiple people are dead – including at least two children – after an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Uvalde on Tuesday afternoon.
Law enforcement sources told ABC News that as many as 14 people had been killed by an “active shooter” at Robb Elementary School on May 24 but officials have not yet confirmed that number.
Preliminary reports indicated the incident began when a murder suspect who was running from the police ran into the elementary school located in the 700-block of Old Carrizo Road and started shooting.
Uvalde Memorial Hospital confirmed that two children have died.
The hospital said 13 students were being treated in the emergency room, two patients had been transferred to San Antonio for treatment, and a third patient was slated for transfer, ABC News reported.
A 45-year-old woman was also being treated for a gunshot wound.
University Health in San Antonio confirmed it was treating a 66-year-old woman in critical condition and a child whose condition has not yet been released, ABC News reported.
Multiple sources told ABC News that the shooter – an 18-year-old man – was taken into custody and has died.
Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin refused to confirm the casualty numbers and said his office was still trying to contact parents of students who were shot.
