Fort Apache Indian Reservation, AZ – White Mountain Apache Police Officer David Kellywood was fatally shot in the line of duty early Monday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The incident occurred on State Route 73 near State Route 260 as Officer Kellywood was responding to a report of a domestic disturbance, the White Mountain Independent reported.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the women and men of the White River Police Department as they deal with the shooting death of Officer David Kellywood,” DPS Colonel Frank Milstead said, according to KTVK. “The dangers of police work is ever present as we protect all from the wicked and evil.”
Details regarding the circumstances of Officer Kellywood’s death have not been released.
Witnesses reported hearing screaming and approximately six gunshots, according to the White Mountain Independent.
Officer Kellywood and the suspect were both transported to Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.
In a Facebook post, Councilman Jerold Altaha described Officer Kellywood as “a fine officer and genuine man of character.”
“His loyalty and devotion to the public safety of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation will always be remembered,” Altaha wrote. “God bless the family of our fallen hero.”
