Champaign, IL – Two Champaign police officers were shot while responding to a report of a domestic disturbance early on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 a.m. on May 19 after police received a report of a domestic disturbance in the 2400-block of North Neil Street, WAND reported.
The officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect shortly thereafter, police said.
The gunman was fatally shot and died at the scene, WAND reported.
Police said two officers were struck by gunfire during the gun battle.
They were rushed to a local hospital and one officer remains in critical condition and the other has been listed as stable, WAND reported.
Details regarding how the shooting unfolded have not been released.
The identities of the wounded officers and the suspect have also not been released.
The Illinois State Police (ISP) are handling the ongoing investigation into the officer-involved shooting with the assistance of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, the Urbana Police Department, and the University of Illinois Police Department.

This morning, at approx. 3:24 a.m., CPD responded to a domestic disturbance. During the response, police encountered an armed individual and two officers were shot. Suspect deceased.
