Atlanta, GA – An Atlanta police officer was shot by a security guard on Thursday morning while responding to a report of a burglary at a boutique clothing and shoe store in West Midtown.
The incident occurred just before 6 a.m. on May 5 at A Ma Maniere located in the 900-block of Marietta Street near the Bar Taco restaurant, WXIA reported.
Pictures of the back of the store showed that burglars had broken through an exterior cinderblock wall to enter the business.
Atlanta Police Assistant Chief Darin Schierbaum said officers responded to the shop after a burglar alarm was activated, WSB reported.
Asst. Chief Schierbaum said that as officers approached the business, a single gunshot was fired.
He said detectives believe the shot was fired by a security guard who was at the business when the break-in occurred, WSB reported.
Officers did not return fire.
Other officers on the scene provided immediate lifesaving aid and put a tourniquet on the wounded hero before the ambulance arrived.
The wounded officer – a four-year veteran of the police force – was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment, WSB reported.
Atlanta police said he was in stable condition but have not released any details about where he was shot.
Officials have not yet identified the wounded officer, WSB reported.
Atlanta police said the officer-involved shooting investigation and the investigation into the break-in were both ongoing.
The security guard was detained at the scene of the shooting and was being interviewed by detectives, WSB reported.
