Arkansas Correctional Officer Murdered By Gunman Inside Jail Facility

Perryville, AR – A Perry County Jail correctional officer was fatally shot by a suspect inside the detention facility on Wednesday night, according to police.

The Arkansas State Police (ASP) said a 37-year-old male suspect had been arrested for a separate offense on June 22 and was being booked into the jail facility late that night when he suddenly shot the correctional officer, the Magnolia Reporter reported.

The correctional officer did not survive.

It is unclear how the suspect obtained the weapon used to murder the correctional officer.

The Perry County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) asked the ASP to handle the investigation into the incident, KNWA reported.

The correctional officer’s name was being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, according to the Magnolia Reporter.

The suspect’s identity has also not been released.

Investigators said he is being held in connection with the shooting, according to the Magnolia Reporter.

The ASP’s investigation into the incident remained ongoing on Thursday morning.
