HollyMatkinDothan, AL – Within 36 hours of leading a march against gun violence, Al Sharpton’s half-brother was arrested and charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a 23-year old woman.
Pastor and community activist Kenneth Sharpton Glasgow, 52, was one of two men charged for the murder of Breunia Jennings, who was found with a “gunshot wound to the head ” on Sunday, Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish said, according to Lynx Media.
Police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at a church just before 11 p.m., WSFA reported.
They discovered a damaged car in an intersection near the area, and located Jennings’ lifeless body inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators learned that 26-year-old Jamie Townes had been upset with Jennings, because he believed she had stolen his car, Lynx Media reported.
He wanted to confront her, and asked Glasgow for help.
“Instead of him notifying law enforcement, he took matters in his own hands and jumped in Mr. Glasgow’s vehicle to find Breunia Jennings,” Chief Parrish said during a news conference, according to Lynx Media.
“Basically, they went hunting,” he added, according to WSFA.
Investigators said they believed Townes fired the round into Jennings’ head, while Glasgow drove.
The bullet shattered the back window of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Jennings had been driving, and glass was scattered around the intersection, WDHN reported.
Two other unnamed occupants inside Glasgow’s vehicle had not been charged.
As he was being led to a police cruiser, Glasgow lamented the damage to his 2018 Toyota Camry, which was parked just feet away from the murdered woman, according to WDHN.
“Man, that’s a brand new car,” he told a bystander.
During a Tuesday court appearance, Glasgow, a convicted felon, said he did not understand why he was facing a capital murder charge, FOX News reported.
“I’m not responsible for what someone else does,” Glasgow told the court. “He just asked me for a ride to take him to look for his car.”
Under Alabama law, a person who is believed to have aided or abetted a crime can be held liable for the crime. Murder committed through the use of a weapon while the victim is in a vehicle is considered to be a capital offense, the Dothan Eagle reported.
Glasgow founded the Ordinary People Society – a homeless ministry and community – after being released from prison on drug charges in the late 1980s, FOX News reported.
Since then, he has fought for voting rights for convicted felons, and has been involved in multiple community movements, according to the Dothan Eagle.
He and his half-brother, National Action Network founder Al Sharpton, have also been photographed delivering meals to the needy, FOX News reported.
In 2016, Glasgow posed for a photo op with Hillary Clinton.
On Saturday, Glasgow marched along the streets of downtown Dothan, demanding gun law reform as he yelled through a megaphone, according to WDHN.
He was being held without bond.
Glasgow’s next court appearance was scheduled for Apr. 6.
