Holly MatkinChicago, IL – At least 33 people – including five children – were wounded in shootings throughout the city of Chicago this past weekend.
“Our kids deserve to know the sound of laughter, not the sound of gunfire regardless of where they live regardless of their background,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel told WGN. “You have nothing but a bunch of gangbangers thinking our streets are their firing range.”
At least 33 people were shot – four fatally – between Friday afternoon and Monday morning, WGN reported.
Twenty-four of the shooting victims were wounded during the same 30-hour period, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The first fatal attack occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on Friday, when a 25-year-old man was shot in the back by a gunman in a light-colored sedan, WMAQ reported.
About three hours later, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the thigh during an altercation with an attempted robbery suspect.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., a 42-year-old woman was hit in the head by a drive-by gunman in the 8500-block of South Buffalo.
She was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.
Another attack occurred at about 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, when a 39-year-old man was shot repeatedly in the abdomen as he was standing outside.
Two other victims were struck by gunfire as they were sitting on the front porch of a home on South Corliss Avenue just before 3:30 p.m. A 20-year-old man was hit in both legs, and a 43-year-old victim was struck in the face.
Both men were transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Less than two hours later, a 27-year-old man was wounded in the left thigh and right arm by a gunman in a dark-colored SUV.
Four adults and two children were shot during a gang-related mass attack during a baby shower in West Englewood at about 6:20 p.m., according to WGN.
According to witnesses, multiple gunmen fired into a crowd, and hitting a 10-year-old girl in the shin, an 8-year-old boy in the back and chest, and a 29-year-old woman in the chest.
All were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Three men, ages 23, 28, and 42, were also wounded in the mass shooting, and remain hospitalized in stable condition, WMAQ reported.
A 4 p.m. shooting in Morgan Park left a 22-year-old man wounded and a 19-year-old man dead, The Chicago Tribune reported.
A 13-year-old boy was shot in the right hip when two men opened fire on a vehicle he was riding in at approximately 8:20 p.m., according to WMAQ.
The boy was transported to Comer’s Hospital in stable condition.
Not even ten minutes later, someone in a black sedan shot a 29-year-old man in his right foot.
Another 29-year-old man was shot in his legs as he was riding in a vehicle just before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.
One hour later, two gunmen shot a 28-year-old man in his right leg. He was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Three more people were shot at about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday as they were standing on West Wilcox Street, the Chicago Tribune reported.
A 33-year-old victim was shot in his left arm, a 26-year-old man was hit in his right foot, and a 34-year-old victim was struck in the right leg.
Another 33-year-old man was shot at about 4:20 a.m., when a gunman in another vehicle pulled up alongside his and opened fire, WMAQ reported.
He remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Just 40 minutes later, a 28-year-old man was repeatedly struck by gunfire as he was riding in a vehicle on West Madison.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The carnage continued at approximately 6:10 a.m., when a 32-year-old man was murdered in the 6600-block of South Maryland Avenue, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his back, and was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Police have not yet arrested any suspects in connection with the homicide.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., police responded to the 6700-block of South Normal Boulevard, where they found the body of a 52-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head.
A person of interest was taken into custody, and the homicide may have taken place during a domestic dispute, police said.
A 39-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his lower back transported himself to Mount Sinai Hospital just before 5:30 p.m., WMAQ reported.
About a half hour later, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg by someone in a light-colored sedan.
He was transported to Holy Cross hospital in stable condition.
A 20-year-old man was critically wounded at approximately 8:38 p.m., when he was shot repeatedly in the back in the 1700-block of East 71st Street.
The most recent attack occurred just after midnight on Monday, when someone shot a man as he was walking to his vehicle, WGN reported.
The victim was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.
