3 Chicago Cops Shot By Carjacking Suspect, Video Shows Long Gunfight

Chicago, IL – Three Chicago police officers were shot by a carjacking suspect on Thursday morning as he was being transported to the police station (video below).

Police said the prisoner was being transported in a police van to the 25th District police station for booking at about 9:40 a.m. on July 30, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

When the van pulled up behind the police station and the officers opened the doors, the suspect opened fire them.

Officers returned fire and a long gun battle ensued behind the 25th District police station on the West Side, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The 25th District police station is located in the 5500-block of West Grand Avenue and also houses a detective bureau, WBBM reported.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters at a press briefing after the incident that one officer was shot in the chin and in his bullet-proof vest, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Superintendent Brown said a second officer was also shot in his ballistic vest but the round did not penetrate the body armor.

The superintendent said a third police officer was shot in the hip, according to the Chicago Tribune.

He said a fourth officer was also transported to the hospital from the scene with chest pains.

“I want to strongly emphasize the inherent danger that these and all Chicago police officers experience everyday protecting the residents of Chicago,” Superintendent Brown said. ”When they leave home, they leave their loved ones, and put these stars on and risk everything. They risk everything protecting all of us.”

Chicago Police Department Spokesman Tom Ahern said one of the wounded officers was transported to the Illinois Masonic Media Center for treatment.

The police department tweeted that other officers were transported to Loyola Hospital, WFLD reported.

The officer who was shot in the chin/neck area was in serious condition, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

The other officers were reportedly in good condition.

Police said the gunman was also shot multiple times, the Chicago Tribune reported.

There was no information available on his condition.

Cell phone video of the incident was posted to social media shortly after the gunfight.

It appears to have been filmed from behind a barbed wire fence on the opposite side of a field from where the police station was located.

Although the gunfight could not actually be seen, more than 50 gunshots were heard in the video as the battle raged behind the police station, many in rapid succession.

Toward the end of the gunfight, other Chicago police vehicles began arriving on the scene in the video.

There were reports that protesters were on the way to 25th District.
