Albuquerque, NM – Three Albuquerque police officers were shot and a fourth was injured by shrapnel or glass while responding to a report of a robbery near a Dutch Bros coffee drive-thru on Thursday morning.
The attack occurred on Aug. 19 near Juan Tabo Boulevard Northeast and Constitution, KOB reported.
Details regarding how the shooting unfolded have not been released.
Albuquerque Police Department (APD) officials said one officer was shot above his ballistic vest and has been listed in critical condition, KRQE reported.
A second officer was rushed into surgery with a gunshot wound to the arm.
A third officer was shot in the center of his ballistic vest, KRQE reported.
“The vest did save that officer’s life,” APD Chief Harold Medina told reporters during a press conference.
A fourth officer suffered injures caused either by shrapnel or by flying shattered glass, police said.
“We ask the community to pray with us for the officers’ health and that they all make it through this,” Chief Medina said.

“Officers who were injured, their families have been notified and they have family members with them,” the chief added. “We want to assure all of the other families of officers who are on scene and haven’t been able to reach out their families, assure them that the officers who were injured, their families have been contacted.”

One suspect was wounded and taken into custody shortly after the shooting occurred, KRQE reported.
A second suspect was taken into custody later in the day, the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) tweeted at 12:34 p.m.
Police said they do not believe there are any additional suspects at large, KRQE reported.
Chief Medina said multiple other individuals have also been detained as the investigation continues.

Officials have not released the names of any of the wounded officers.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), New Mexico State Police, Valencia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office have all responded to the scene to assist the APD, the chief noted.
