Harlem, GA – A 23-year-old Georgia high school teacher was arrested for sexual assault on Monday, after investigators learned she had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a 19-year-old student.
Harlem High School teacher Lesley Douglas has been charged with one count of sexual assault against a person in custody, due to the fact that she was in a position of authority over the student, WRDW reported.
Although it was unclear whether or not the unnamed 19-year-old was one of Douglas’ students, the individual did attend the high school that Douglas taught at.
The alleged sexual contact occurred on Mar. 27, at a boat ramp in Appling, Georgia, according to Douglas’ arrest warrant.
Investigators made contact with school officials on Apr. 11, and Douglas resigned the following day, WLOX reported.
She had been with the Columbia County School district for approximately one year.
“The Columbia County School District is committed to providing its students with the best education possible in a safe, positive environment,” school officials said in a press release, according to WRDW. “In doing so, we hold our faculty and staff to the highest standards and have zero tolerance for any behavior that detracts from our mission.”
Douglas appeared to be married, according to her social media accounts.
Douglas had not been offered bond, the Columbia County Sheriff’s office said, according to WRDW.
This incident comes after a 22-year-old female teacher in Connecticut was charged with three counts of felony sexual assault for having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old male student who attended a different school in her school district.
