2 Elderly Women Stabbed, Father Pushing Stroller Beaten In Random Attacks On Asian Victims

San Francisco, CA – Two Asian women were stabbed and an Asian man pushing a stroller was brutally beaten in two separate attacks just days apart.

None of the victims knew their attackers.

The first assault occurred in the Mission Bay neighborhood as a 36-year-old man identified only as “Bruce” was waiting to cross the street wit his one-year-old son, who he was pushing in a stroller, the New York Post reported.

Without warning, a man suddenly slammed him to the ground and began punching him repeatedly, surveillance footage showed.

“I was right on the ground and in that exact second I was trying to shield my head and prevent any worse injuries,” Bruce told KGO. “I couldn’t protect my child. I was on the floor and he was in a stroller that was slowly rolling away, so it’s definitely very scary as a parent.”

Police later arrested 26-year-old Sidney Hammond in connection with the unprovoked attack, the New York Post reported.

Hammond has been charged with child endangerment, false imprisonment, and assault.

Bruce told KGO the encounter has left him shaken.

“My sense of security has been shattered,” he said.

Hammond was also arrested less than a month prior to the attack for allegedly assaulting and stealing from another victim at the same location, KGO reported.

Bruce said he hopes his attacker will be placed “somewhere where he can’t harm anyone else or if he needs help, he can get the help he needs.”

Two more random attacks occurred on Tuesday near the intersection of Market Street and 4th Street, KGO reported.

Chui Fong Eng, 85, had taken the bus to go grab her groceries and was waiting at the bus stop when a man suddenly stabbed her, according to her grandson, Drew Eng.

A 65-year-old woman was also stabbed by the same perpetrator.

“He got a knife on his right-hand side and he was holding it really tight like he wanted to do something,” one witness told KPIX. “And before you know he was behind this lady with a black jacket and you saw all the feathers go flying, so he sliced her, she screamed.”

“The assailant walked up to their victim stabbed them and very casually walked away in broad daylight,” witness Jenny Shao told the news outlet.

Both women were rushed to the hospital, where Chui Fong Eng underwent more than four hours of emergency surgery, KGO reported.

“I was told the knife nicked her lung and ribcage,” Drew Eng said of his grandmother’s injuries. “It was a really long knife.”

Doctors have said they expect her to survive, he told KGO.

“She’s just an amazing woman,” Drew Eng said.

A fundraising campaign established to help Chui Fong Eng through her recovery has raised over $82,000 so far.

The 65-year-old woman also suffered severe injuries in the attack, KGO reported.

She is expected to recover.

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said the attacker walked off casually after attacking the Asian women, KGO reported.

Police arrested him in the 600-block of Eddy Street about an hour area.

Chief Scott said the officers “were familiar” with the suspect, who has since been identified as 54-year-old Patrick Thompson, KGO reported.

Thompson’s prior criminal history includes offenses such as battery with serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon.

He now faces charges of elder abuse and attempted murder, the San Francisco Examiner reported.
