AndrewBlakeParkland, FL – Cities across America were dealing with threats of school violence in the wake of the horrible carnage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
We have counted at least 20 incidents of threats or arrests involving weapons or threats at school since the shooting last week.
Below are a few of those incidents.
Florida
On Thursday, a sixth grade student at a Nova Middle School in Davies, Florida, was arrested just 24 miles from where Nikolas Cruz murdered 17 people at his former Parkland high school, according to WFOR-TV.
The 11-year-old girl was caught on surveillance video putting a threatening note underneath the door of an assistant principal.
“I will bring a gun to school to kill all of you ugly a*s kids and teachers b**h. I will bring the gun Feb, 16, 18. BE prepared b**h!”
The girl was taken into custody and held in a juvenile center.
On Friday, police say that 14-year-old Edward Charles Osgood posted a threat to Snapchat.
Osgood attends Lealman Innovation Academy in St. Petersburg and has since been arrested.
Osgood claimed that the gun was a BB gun and he thought that the post was funny, according to Tampa Bay Times.
New Jersey
School officials in Nutley, New Jersey closed all the schools in the district on Friday because police were investigating a video posted on Instagram on Thursday, according to WPIX-TV.
The post included lyrics from the song “Pumped Up Kicks” which is about a kid plotting revenge.
“All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet”
The Nutley Police Department said the suspect was cooperating with the investigation, and there didn’t appear to be an immediate threat to the public.
Missouri
Police in Arnold, Missouri, arrested a 16-year-old boy after he sent a threatening text message on Thursday warning students not to come to Fox Senior High School on Feb. 20, because he was going to bring a gun and possibly explosives, according to KTVI-TV.
Authorities located the student within two hours and arrested him on Feb. 15.
The boy admitted to sending the threatening text message, but said he hadn’t planned to follow through on the threat. Police found no weapons at his home, KTVI reported.
South Carolina
In Spartanburg, South Carolina, on the day after the Florida massacre, police arrested a Broome High School student after he posted a photo of himself holding an apparent assault rifle with the caption “Round 2 of Florida tomorrow” on Snapchat.
The student told police the post was only a joke, according to WHNS-TV.
Police searched his home and found only a pellet gun, and determined the teenager had no access to real firearms.
Maryland
An 18-year-old high school student was arrested for bringing a loaded gun and knife to school on Thursday in Clarksburg, Maryland.
The Clarksburg High School school resource officer took Alwin Chen into custody at the school.
Then he was taken to the Central Processing Unit where he was charged with possession of a handgun, possession of a firearm by a person under 21 years old and possession of a firearm on school property, Newsweek reported.
A 14-year old Loch Raven High School student was also arrested for bringing a BB gun to school on Thursday.
Georgia
A Lee High School student was charged with making terroristic threats after they posted a pictures of a book bag and claimed there was a gun inside on Snapchat, according to WALB-TV.
Leesburg Police said there was no immediate threat to the school.
The next day, a middle school student in Atlanta was arrested for posting a threatening message on Snapchat.
The 12-year-old boy was charged with terroristic threats on Friday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Maine
On Friday morning, students in Topsham, Maine were met by additional police officers when they arrived at their Mt. Ararat High School after a possible threat was made Feb. 15.
Police were notified that two boys were talking about online video games focused on school violence, according to WGME-TV.
In South Portland, Maine, a 15-year-old suspect from South Portland High School was put under house arrest after police said he posted an online threat to, “shoot up the school.”
Police said he posted the threat on Wednesday evening, and students reported it to the school resource officer on Thursday morning. The suspect was apprehended in the school parking lot.
He was carrying a knife, but police said they found no guns on him or in his home.
Police charged the student with terrorizing and carrying a concealed weapon, WGME reported.
Washington
A 14-year-old student at Hawkins Middle School in Mason county was taken into custody Thursday, and referred to mental health counseling after he told a school counselor that he has thought about committing a school shooting in the past, according to Kitsap Sun.
North Carolina
A student at Garner Magnet High school made unspecificed “concerning social media posts” and school officials found that he had brought a gun onto school property, according to WRAL.
Texas
Five Dallas-area students were arrested for bringing guns to school in separate incidents on Thursday, according to The Dallas Morning News.
